SafeSTS opens base in Trinidad

The new base is located offshore Port of Spain in the Gulf of Paria, off the northwest coast of Trinidad. The well-equipped base enables the company to carry out ship-to-ship transfers at anchor, with berthing carried out using port tugs. Lack of draft restrictions means that SafeSTS can undertake transfers from both smaller MR/coastal tankers and super tanker sized vessels (VLCCs - very large crude carriers) capable of transporting 2 000 000 bbls (320 000 m3) of oil.

"The Trinidadian base is equipped with tier 2 oil spill response equipment and trained personnel," comments SafeSTS Managing Director, Yvonne Mason. "However, we have conducted over 1600 STS operations since May 2010, transferring in excess of 350 million bbls of oil with zero spills, an achievement we are very proud of, and which demonstrates our commitment to safety...working in this sheltered area ensures no weather delays to the vessels carrying out STS operations at this location."

One of the core strengths of SafeSTS is the company's understanding of vessel dynamics, operability and logistics, all of which are underpinned with respect for the country and culture in which it works. All lightering operations are undertaken with strict observance of Marpol Chapter 8 and the latest ICS/OCIMF ship-to-ship transfer guidelines.
