Hydrocarbon Engineering,

Keen interest in alkylation and sulfuric acid recovery within the refining industry prompted DuPont Clean Technologies to hold a dedicated symposium on the topics in Dubai from 15 – 17 September 2019.

The event was attended by leading refiners from the Middle East and India, who took part in three full-day workshops.

The first two days focused on critical alkylation processes, discussing the design and operation of feed treatment and the reaction zone, the refrigeration section, acid blowdown, net effluent treating and fractionation, Contactor™ reactor maintenance and mechanics, propylene and amylene alkylation, corrosion and fouling in alkylation units, as well as acid runaway and prevention.

Delegates were furthermore given an overview of the latest innovations in alkylation technologies and research.

Best practices in sulfuric acid recovery was the focal topic of the final day. Workshop participants were treated to a range of seminars on best practices for decomposition/furnace operation, conversion and maintenance. Presenters shared guidelines, case studies and insights in design, operations, maintenance and controls, gained over years of working with the refining industry.

As one of the workshop participants, Narendra Kumar Mall, a Senior Process Engineer at Petro Rabigh Refining and Petrochemicals, explains: “Alkylation is still a relatively new technology for the Middle East. There are several upgrades, especially in the field of operation, in safety and reliability and SAR operation that can be made. We have learned from DuPont how to improve operation control, field patrolling and organise an inspection programme, which lead to great progress in terms of unit reliability.”

Michael Cherry, Global Business Manager, Alkylation Aftermarket, STRATCO® Alkylation said: “Events like this symposium are important for the refining industry to understand and assess the range of options available to them for alkylation and sulfuric acid recovery. These are key processes in this era of abundant, cheap butanes and LPG which, coupled with the high value of alkylate, open up a number of opportunities for refineries. With almost a century of experience in alkylation technology, more than 100 licences worldwide, STRATCO® Alkylation is an expert in this technology field.”
