A fire occurred in a tank at the Wakayama refinery (1000 Hama, Hatsushima-cho, Arida City, Wakayama) of TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. at around 6:50 a.m. during tank cleaning operations. The fire was extinguished at around 3:30 p.m. as a result of efforts by local authorities and the refinery’s fire brigade. No injuries occurred in connection with the fire, and refinery operations, as well as overland and marine shipping operations, are proceeding as usual.
The company extended its deepest apologies to the members of the local community and others concerned, and especially to those who have evacuated their homes, for the inconvenience and concern caused by the fire that occurred at the TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. Wakayama refinery, on 18 January 2017.
The fire broke out in the lubricant oil processing facilities of the Wakayama refinery. As of 10:30p.m., the occurrence of flames near the No. 2 propane dewaxing unit and the No. 2 NMP extraction unit has been confirmed. To prevent further damage, TonenGeneral Sekiyu K.K. is fully engaged in firefighting efforts in cooperation with the relevant authorities, including blocking the flow of raw materials to the affected units while spraying water to cool the surrounding units in order to prevent the spread of the blaze. The company will continue to do its utmost to ensure the safety of those in the surrounding community.
Operations of the refinery units not affected by the fire have been reduced to a minimum, and shipping operations tomorrow morning will be postponed. Further information will be made available as soon as the facts are confirmed. Regarding this incident, as well as tank fire that occurred at the Wakayama refinery during tank cleaning operations on 18 January, the company once again extends its sincere apologies to the members of the local community and all others concerned.
