Hydrocarbon Engineering,
Following the Israeli government’s tightening of health, safety and environment (HSE) regulations, PAZ Ashdod Refinery has had to revamp its existing process gas compressors for hydrogen application to comply with the new standards. PAZ assigned Burckhardt Compression to both perform this task and restore the performance of the compressors of another original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
The PAZ Ashdod Refinery is located in Ashdod and is currently the second largest oil refinery in Israel. It operates to the strictest environmental and safety standards while striving to produce high-quality products and investing in improving capabilities and content. Because of this, PAZ Ashdod decided against a 1:1 replacement of its original OEM compressors, opting instead for a general revamp to the latest technology update. This was conducted by Burckhardt Compression. Continuous improvement of the refinery’s HSE compliancy was guaranteed.
Besides upgrading all three hydrogen compressors, such that they conform with API 618, advanced technology designs were applied to the cylinders and all related compressor components, and a new motor with flexible coupling for lower maintenance and higher reliability was also installed.
The project was concluded with the compressors running successfully. This helped to develop a close partnership between PAZ and Burckhardt Compression – a good foundation for future projects.
