Hydrocarbon Engineering,
According to the International Energy Agency, global CCUS capture capacity could reach around 430 million tpy of CO2 by 2030 based on the current project pipeline. As CCS and hydrogen projects move from pilots to larger scale deployment, engineers face new modelling challenges across the full workflow, from fluid characterisation and phase behaviour to transport, storage, and process integration.
“Engineering teams are no longer modelling only conventional hydrocarbon systems,” said Behnam Salimi, Senior Product Manager for Multiflash at KBC. “They are evaluating CO2-rich fluids, hydrogen systems, saline produced waters, reactive mixtures, and petrochemical separations, often within the same workflow. Multiflash 7.7 helps bring greater consistency and confidence with those calculations.”
Key capabilities include:
- Chemical reaction flash for systems where chemistry impacts fluid behaviour.
- Enhanced electrolyte modelling expands support for brines, salts, and ions, enabling improved workflows for scaling, corrosion, and produced-water systems.
- Improved CCS and hydrogen modelling advances handling of CO2-rich and H2-rich systems to support carbon capture, transport, and hydrogen applications.
- Consistent thermodynamic modeling of complex fluids across conventional and emerging energy systems.
Version 7.7 also expands Petro-SIM® process simulation integration, broadens API support, and enhances ThermoBuilder, simplifying deployment and streamlining engineering analysis. Together, these enhancements help engineers apply consistent thermodynamic models in different reservoir, pipeline, and process environments, reducing uncertainty and improving decision-making.
"Trusted thermodynamics are the foundation of engineering," said Simon Rogers, Chief Technology Officer at KBC. “As industry addresses increasingly complex challenges across conventional and emerging energy systems, the need for accurate thermodynamic prediction continues to grow. Our goal is to provide the scientific foundation engineers need to make informed decisions across a wide range of applications."
Multiflash 7.7 is another step in KBC's mission of Bringing Decarbonization to Life®.
