Hydrocarbon Engineering,
Building on Galp's sustainability initiatives started in 2017, KBC leveraged its integrated process, energy, emissions, and economics model to evaluate and prioritise over 100 energy efficiency and CO2 reduction opportunities. The comprehensive roadmap assessed the refinery's configuration and explored the impact of technologies such as carbon capture, green electricity, green and blue hydrogen, and electrification.
This strategic partnership has charted a course to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions by at least 30%. The initiative shows how collaboration can significantly reduce emissions while maintaining operational excellence and economic viability.
The ERTC Industry Awards, organised by the World Refining Association, recognise outstanding achievements that bridge traditional refining practices with innovative technologies that foster sustainable transformation. This award recognises KBC's commitment to help clients implement actionable solutions to address the complex challenges of the energy transition.
Hugo Carabineiro, Technology Director at Galp, commented: "KBC's work with us demonstrates the power of collaboration in driving sustainable change. Their decarbonisation roadmap helped us set a new standard for the industry and showcases the potential for significant emissions reduction in refining operations."
Takayuki Matsubara, CEO at KBC, expressed gratitude for the recognition: "This award is a testament to our team's commitment in leading the energy transition. Our partnership with Galp has not only set new benchmarks for sustainability in refining but also reinforces our dedication to Bringing Decarbonization to Life®. We're proud to be the leader of driving practical, impactful solutions for a more sustainable future in the energy sector."
