EIA: average gasoline and diesel prices decrease in the US

The US average regular gasoline retail price decreased US$0.02 to US$3.28/gal. on 27 December 2021, US$1.03 higher than in 2020. The Gulf Coast price decreased more than US$0.03 to US$2.91/gal., the Rocky Mountain price decreased more than US$0.02 up to US$3.39/gal., the Midwest and West Coast prices each decreased nearly US$0.02 to US$3.03/gal. and US$4.13/gal., respectively, and the East Coast price decreased more than US$0.01 to US$3.24/gal.

The US average diesel fuel price decreased more than US$0.01 to US$3.62/gal. on 27 December 2021, US$0.98 higher than in 2020. The Rocky Mountain price decreased nearly US$0.03 to US$3.70/gal., the Midwest price decreased more than US$0.01 to US$3.48/gal., the West Coast price decreased US$0.01 to US$4.37/gal., and the East Coast and Gulf Coast prices each decreased nearly US$0.01 to US$3.60/gal. and US$3.33/gal., respectively.

US propane/propylene stocks decreased by 3.6 million bbl to 66.5 million bbl as of 24 December 2021, 7.1 million bbl (9.7%) less than the 5-year (2016 – 2020) average inventory levels for this same time of year. Gulf Coast inventories decreased by 2.8 million bbl, Midwest inventories decreased by 0.4 million bbl, and East Coast and Rocky Mountain/West Coast inventories each decreased by 0.2 million bbl.

As of 27 December 2021, residential heating oil prices averaged nearly US$3.37/gal., more than US$0.02/gal. above the previous week’s price and almost US$0.93/gal. higher than 2020’s price at this time. Wholesale heating oil prices averaged nearly US$2.47/gal., more than US$0.11/gal. above the previous week’s price and US$0.86/gal. above 2020’s price.

Residential propane prices averaged US$2.70/gal., less than US$0.01/gal. above the previous week’s price and US$0.73/gal. above 2020’s price. Wholesale propane prices averaged almost US$1.24/gal., more than US$0.04/gal. above the previous week’s price and more than US$0.40/gal. above 2020’s price.
