John Zink Hamworthy Combustion® (JZHC) – a Koch Engineered Solutions (KES) company – has introduced Smart Combustion, a suite of technologies that allows facilities to optimise operations of their combustion systems, improving production efficiency, equipment life, and environmental performance.

Smart Combustion technology can be applied to JZHC burners, flares, and thermal oxidisers, as well as combustion equipment not produced by JZHC, including fired heaters and steel furnaces. With a multi-platform approach, Smart Combustion has the right combination of technologies for any goal or budget.

JZHC announced Smart Combustion solutions with the launch of its digital combustion assistant, Ember™, for improved process burner performance. Ember gathers real-time data from a variety of sources, then processes that data using first-principle models and advanced data analytic techniques to generate actionable instructions which plant personnel across many levels can use to optimise performance. In addition to this instructional data, Ember can provide indications for equipment health which can lead to proactive maintenance activities.

“Smart Combustion goes beyond delivering mere analytics,” said Tom Korb, Vice President, Smart Combustion. “The real value is how we process that information using our years of combustion experience and expertise, world-class combustion CFD modelling capabilities, and cloud-based artificial intelligence technologies developed in collaboration with EFT Analytics. It’s more than data. It’s knowing what to do with that data.”

Smart Combustion solutions work seamlessly and securely with existing site historians and information can be delivered back to users’ historian or via web/mobile access, cloud/edge deployment, and more.

“We at KES have the expertise to deliver superior value by developing, integrating, and applying innovative technical and service solutions for industrial value chains,” said Dave Dotson, President of KES. “The collaboration on Smart Combustion technology between John Zink Hamworthy Combustion and EFT Analytics, both KES companies, is yet another example of how we can effectively offer that competitive advantage to our customers.”

Another Smart Combustion solution offered by the company is their ZoloSCAN combustion monitoring and measurement system. ZoloSCAN works by applying multiplexed lasers in strategic locations throughout the radiant section of a furnace in order to provide real-time feedback of combustion health. ZoloSCAN has the ability to measure O2, temperature, CO and water simultaneously, eliminating the need for separate instruments.

ZoloSCAN can provide value to the user independently or work in combination with Ember to deliver a complete picture of the combustion system and environment.
