ORLEN discovers new gas fields for production

Hydrocarbon Engineering,

Nearly a quarter of a billion m3 of gas – this is the size of the reserves in the Siedlemin field near the town of Jarocin. The swift commencement of production from this new find will be facilitated by the extensive extraction infrastructure in the region. ORLEN is currently operating three gas fields in the County of Jarocin and plans to explore additional prospects in the area.

The Siedlemin field was discovered at a depth of approximately 3 km as part of a joint project of ORLEN S.A. and ORLEN Upstream Polska. The exploration drilling was carried out by Exalo Drilling, a company of the ORLEN Group. After production tests, the field’s reserves were estimated at over 235 million m3 of natural gas.

“In line with our commitments, we are maximising gas production in Poland to harness every available opportunity. The discovery of the Siedlemin field near Jarocin underscores the strong position of the Province of Poznan on Poland’s energy map. It is in this province that ORLEN produces the largest volumes of natural gas domestically. The exploration and discovery of new fields are integral to our strategy, where gas plays a crucial role in supporting the energy transition by balancing the system that increasingly relies on renewable energy sources. ORLEN’s production activities also bring tangible financial benefits to local communities,” said Wieslaw Prugar, Member of the ORLEN Management Board, Upstream.

The Siedlemin field is located in an area with promising prospects for hydrocarbon production, as confirmed by the results of previous exploration work and other gas discoveries in the region, including Radlin, Kleka, Kleka E, Roszków, and Chwalecin.

ORLEN plans to continue exploring for additional resources in the area, benefiting from the region's well-developed production and transmission infrastructure, which reduces the time and costs involved in the launch of production from new fields.

Oil and gas companies operating in Poland are required to pay a special production royalty, 90% of which is transferred to local municipalities where extraction activities take place. These funds represent a stable additional source of revenue for local government budgets. In 2024, production royalties transferred to the municipalities where the Zielona Góra Branch operates totalled nearly PLN80 million.

In 2023, the ORLEN Group’s natural gas production reached 7.1 billion m3, accounting for 42% of Poland’s total demand. Of this, 3.4 billion m3 were extracted in Poland, with nearly 1.7 billion m3 coming from the Province of Poznan.

The Group’s new strategy to 2035 provides for an increase in total natural gas production from domestic and foreign fields to 12 billion m3 by 2030, including 4 billion m3 from fields in Poland.
