Hydrocarbon Engineering,
In an historic first, Uzbekistan’s new state-of-the-art gas-to-liquids (GTL) plant in the Qashqadaryo Region has begun producing synthetic oil.
The fluid is currently being stored in the massive complex’s intermediate storage tank awaiting refinement and processing into diesel fuel, aviation fuel, kerosene, naphtha and LPG, which is expected to begin soon.
Officials report that synthesis gas began flowing on the night of 14 June and was then piped into the plant’s Fischer-Tropsch reactors, leading to the first synthesised fluid on15 June. Laboratory testing showed the oil to be in full compliance with production standards.
Uzbekistan GTL CEO, Fakhritdin Abdurasulov, said: “This is an exciting moment for Uzbekistan GTL and our team of 1300 specialists, engi-neers and other workers. Very soon we will be generating products which will reduce our nation’s reliance on imports and contributing to a major new development of our petrochemicals industry.”
When fully operational, the plant will produce over 1.5 million tpy of high quality, environmentally friendly synthetic liquid fuel, under the brand name Oltin Yo'l GTL (‘Golden Way’) – a symbol of the new path Uzbekistan is taking towards a more sustainable, prosperous, and environmentally friendly future.
The US$3.4 billion UzGTL complex was officially opened by Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in December 2021.
Besides producing cleaner fuels including synthetic kerosene, diesel, aviation jet fuel and LPG for the transport and aviation sectors, the plant will also supply synthetic naphtha from UzGTL to the Shurtan Gas Chemical Complex, which will be expanded in the near future. The creation of a local petrochemical cluster will make it possible to produce an additional line of products and organise waste-free production with maximum local processing.
