Hydrocarbon Engineering,
Petrobras has chosen Topsoe as technology provider for its potential new sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blending component and renewable diesel project at the Boaventura Energy Complex in Itaboraí, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The project will be based on Topsoe’s HydroFlex® technology, proprietary equipment and catalysts to enable the production of SAF and renewable diesel.
Once operational, the facility will process different types of vegetable oils, waste materials and animal fat as feedstocks. It will be one of the largest SAF plants in Brazil.
Yassir Ghiyati, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, said: “We are honoured to support Petrobras on this exciting project. By combining Petrobras’ strong position in the Brazilian energy sector with Topsoe’s leading HydroFlex technology, this project could contribute meaningfully to the supply of SAF and renewable diesel in Latin America. It represents an important step toward strengthening fuel diversification in one of the world’s most dynamic energy markets.”
This agreement addresses the growing global demand for SAF. The International Air Transport Association projected that SAF production in 2025 would reach 1.9 million t – nearly double the 1 million t produced in 2024. Production is expected to grow to 2.4 million t in 2026.1
