Kilang Pertamina delivers SAF

Hydrocarbon Engineering,

After undergoing a series of quality standard tests at the Cilacap Unit of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) and Lemigas laboratories, KPI officially carried out the first lifting/delivery of Pertamina sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from a mixture of used cooking oil (UCO).

The production of Pertamina SAF from UCO marks an important milestone in supporting the roadmap for developing the Indonesian SAF industry.

This first shipment was carried out as part of the Pertamina SAF flight using used cooking oil, which will begin in mid-August 2025 using a Pelita Air Services aircraft on the Jakarta-Denpasar route. Approximately 32 000 l of Pertamina SAF from the Cilacap Refinery was prepared for the flight.

“This is a significant achievement for KPI in the energy transformation, as well as a strategic step in the transition to low-carbon energy in Indonesia. The Cilacap Green Refinery project is a strategic step to accelerate the energy transition to renewable energy and contribute to reducing carbon emissions by up to 84% compared to fossil aviation fuel,” explained CEO of KPI, Taufik Adityawarman. “This is in line with the government's target to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner. Every airline using Pertamina's SAF will receive the ISCC CORSIA Proof of Sustainability, which proves that the entire supply chain has met sustainability standards and has been audited by international institutions.”

The UCO used has been thoroughly tested and then processed at the Cilacap Green Refinery in the Treated Distillate Hydro Treating (TDHT) Unit.

The production process is carried out using UCO Co-Processing technology, using the Merah Putih Catalyst, a domestically formulated and produced product. Pertamina SAF products also meet international standards ASTM D1655 and DefStan 91-091.

Initially, production capacity is targeted at 9 metric bbl. KPI will also ship 1.7 million l to Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia.
