White Cross Rubber wins above ground fuel storage tank project

The UK’s specialist rubber sheeting and rubber coated textile manufacturer, White Cross Rubber Products Limited, is celebrating a project win that is taking its products to China.

The win sees Lancaster based White Cross Rubber Products’ Petroseals rubber sheeting and coated textile products – hydrocarbon resistant materials that are virtually unaffected by fuel storage and atmospheric conditions – being exported and installed as floating roof seals in above ground fuel storage tanks in China.

The rubber products form a complex seal system between the tank wall and the floating roof as it moves up and down in response to changing fuel level, to mitigate the threat of explosions in a vapour filled void. The two component system features a continuous inflatable tube up to 250 metres long made from Petroseal PNG sheeting, which White Cross Rubber Products also assisted its client in by fabricating part of the tubeseal order to help its customer meet its project deadlines. The tube then sits against the thicker and grooved Petroseal PNX ‘scuffband’ to reduce abrasive forces whilst in operation.

White Cross Rubber Products is producing 15 000 metres of product to be used as seals in these enormous 80 metre diameter tanks in China. Huge pressures from tank farm operators to minimise costly voidage when the tanks aren’t full means the installation process and the supply of materials cannot waiver from schedule. Once installed, there is an extended interval until the next maintenance schedule is required on the tank seals, as Petroseal rubber sheeting from White Cross Rubber Products are synonymous with longer services lives.

White Cross Rubber Products Managing Director, Rod Harper said: “We’re delighted with the variety and level of projects we’ve been able to secure this year, including this fantastic project in China. This involves the supply of fabricated tubeseals and scuffband sheeting in three phases for more than 30 floating roof storage tanks varying in diameter from 57 metres up to 80 metres. The company has seen significant growth in this market particularly on an international basis as we’ve satisfied the stringent delivery and quality demands of our multinational customers.”
