The uses and growth of gas analysers

Published by , Editor
Hydrocarbon Engineering,

Gas analysers are instruments used for determining the qualitative and quantitative compositions of gas mixtures. As complicated as its definition may sound, gas analysers are exactly what they are defined as: devices used to measure and analyse gases.

Whether it's carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide or sulphur, these machines are created to detect the levels of most gases in various different systems for product quality control purposes and hazard prevention. So what exactly are gas analysers used for?

Well, carbon dioxide analysers are suitable for monitoring any controlled environment such as greenhouses or other agricultural and food storage facilities, in combustion applications and sometimes in fire testing.

Other uses include:

  • Fermentation
  • Gas separation
  • Furnaces
  • Oxygen aspirator
  • Boilers
  • Cement and kilns
  • Chemistry and laboratory experiments

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is a toxic and deadly gas found in crude oil. Measurement of H2S is also a beneficial practice for product quality control purposes and for personnel safety for those who may come in contact with fatal sour gas. Crude oil with low levels of H2S is more valuable than oil with high H2S, since the low level oil can be more readily processed into petroleum products. Efficient removal of the H2S is not possible without H2S analysers, which optimises the process and cut costs.

Measuring H2S in crude oil is especially important to ensure safe storage and transportation of sour crude oil via roadways, railroads, by sea or pipelines. It is highly corrosive, which can deteriorate pipelines and other transport vessels, as well as highly flammable. All factors present a health risk to personnel and the nearby public when transporting crude oil.

But no matter the gas type, the main purposes of analysers are to prevent air pollution and hazards. There has been an increase in the adoption of gas and liquid analytical systems in various industries. Liquid analyser markets alone are slated to generate US$1.43 billion by 2020. With that being said, analyser companies compete to develop groundbreaking machines with the most reliable and fastest technology.
