Oman to boost refining capacity

Oman is planning to double its refinery output by 2019 and boost exports in order to compete with OPEC members Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, according to local industry sources. Oman currently operates two refineries with a combined capacity of 222 000 bpd; new projects are set to raise this figure to 312 000 bpd by 2019.
One of these projects will involve the expansion of Oman Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company’s (Orpic’s) facility in Sohar. The refinery has a current production capacity of 116 000 bpd; upon completion of the expansion project, capacity is expected to increase by 82 000 bpd and the plant will be able to process heavier crude oil for export.
In addition, Oman Oil Co. and Abu Dhabi’s International Petroleum Investment Co. (IPIC) are planning to construct a new 230 000 bpd refinery in Duqm. The facility will be designed to process a mixture of UAE and Omani crude oil to be shipped out as refined products, and is expected to be operational by 2019.
