Axens has announced the signature of several technology licensing agreements with Pertamina for its major expansion project to upgrade residue into gasoline in Balikpapan and for a new middle distillate hydrotreater in Cilacap, to comply with new regulations.

The Balikpapan project consists of a grassroots resid FCC unit (R2RTM) with a design capacity of 90 000 bpd, a LPG sulfur removal unit (SulfrexTM), a propylene recovery unit (PRU) as well a new 80 000 bpd middle distillate hydrotreater (Prime-DTM). The gasoline produced by the resid FCC unit will be selectively hydrodesulfurised in a Prime-G+TM unit with a design capacity of 48 000 bpd to produce ultra clean gasoline.

The Cilacap project consists of a 36 000 bpd grassroots Prime-D (distillate hydrotreater) unit allowing the production of ultra low sulfur diesel.

The integration of Axens’ suite of technologies from the state of the art Resid FCC to the production of ultra clean fuels thanks to the world leading technologies such as Prime-G+ and Prime-D will enable Pertamina to significantly reduce Indonesia’s dependence on foreign imports of transportation fuels.

“The signature of these agreements marks an important milestone in the partnership between our two companies,” said Jean Sentenac, President and CEO of Axens. Then, he continued on to say, “We started our collaboration back in 2002 and the magnitude of these new projects underlines the trust built over the years. Axens is committed to delivering the highest quality of work to make this project a full success and we are proud to contribute to Pertamina future supply of top quality fuels.”

“Congratulations to Axens that was chosen through a very competitive licensor selection process. I do believe that after this process our project will run faster to achieve Pertamina and Indonesia goal for reducing imports of fuels” said Rachmad Hardadi, Pertamina Refinery Director. Then, he continued on to say, “With this opportunity, we believe it will enhance our engineering capability regarding transfer of knowledge on refining technology with the assignment of our engineers as the representative engineers in Axens Head Office and who will be directly involved in the basic engineering design study. Also with this condition it will add value for Axens on the next Pertamina projects.”
