Uzbekistan’s first oil sludge processing plant has commenced operations at Saneg’s Fergana oil refinery (FNPZ).

This new initiative will reduce the refinery’s impact on the environment, while boosting its long-term economic sustainability.

Oil sludge is a residual product of crude oil processing, formed at the final stage of separating oil into light and dark fractions.

The processing plant divides the oil sludge into liquid and solid elements, which are then re-used to make more oil products at the refinery. The water recovered during this process is recirculated throughout the refinery’s operations.

FNPZ appointed Chinese company GN Solids Control to develop, manufacture and deliver the mobile processing unit, which can process a variety of oil sludge compositions. The entire project cost US$517 000.

By 30 March 2023, the plant had operated for more than 180 hours, processing 450 m3 of oil sludge.

"Over recent years, FNPZ accumulated more than 10 000 m3 of oil sludge. By enabling the separation of oil residues, this new installation reduces our environmental footprint,” said Abdusalom Abdumanony, FNPZ’s Deputy Director for Modernization.

"Since the new plant can process around 3000 m3 of oil sludge per month, we can recycle our own waste as well as oil sludge from other industrial enterprises in Uzbekistan.”
