US refineries are preparing for Hurricane Joaquin, which forecasts suggest will travel up the East Coast, where there are nine refineries with operational capacity of approximately 1.3 million bpd.

According to the National Hurricane Centre, three refineries in New Jersey and three in the Philadelphia area could be in the storm’s path, although the exact trajectory is uncertain.

Joaquin’s top winds were 130 mph at 2pm 1 October, and it was located 70 miles south of San Salvador, Bahamas. It is anticipated to strengthen into a Category 4 storm with winds reaching 140 mph.
