New GSM Offshore Communication System

Hydrocarbon Engineering,

Top Side Offshore Technology has introduced a new Offshore Communication System based on GSM technology, that bridges the gaps in communication offshore: ComPro+.

GSM network

Built on a private GSM network covering the full offshore installation, ComPro+ facilitates Communication over voice and data, Lone Worker Protection, Track and Trace of personnel. The technology also extends and personalises the fire and gas alarm and can be used for many other, installation specific, applications.

Easy communication

All personnel carrying a ComPro+ communication device can be reached wherever they are on board, making on board communication extremely easy. Incoming calls can simply be forwarded, without having to physically locate the needed person. The communication devices support all communication including text messages and e-mail. Tablets can be used to send worksheets, permits to work, etc. or to browse the web.

Location alerts

Besides communication, ComPro+ is also set up to locate personnel. The local cells that create the GSM network are hard wired to the main server/control center. ComPro+ beacons can be mounted at as many locations as needed and are connected via GSM to one of the local cells. The location of each beacon is known by the control center. In case of a personal emergency, personnel outfitted with a communication device can raise the alarm by pressing the alarm button. An alarm message is sent via the central switchboard to the necessary handhelds including the nature (emergency) and location of the incident (e.g. drill floor).

Alarm messages

By linking the ComPro+ communication system to the existing fire and gas detection system, alarm messages will be forwarded to each device, showing a pre-programmed. This will drastically reduce emergency response time and thus enhance the safety on board the installation.

Walkie-talkie capabilities

The ComPro+ communication devices can also be used as full duplex ‘walkie-talkies’. The product is hardware, device, protocol, system and technology independent. It supports and combines technology such as GPS, Rfid, Wifi, Zigbee, Bluetooth, UWB, Mobile data, Simcard and other technology to pinpoint the in- and outdoor location of a person, object or vehicle. The system can also be integrated in third party systems.
