Ion Science unveils continuous benzene specific monitor

Published by , Editor
Hydrocarbon Engineering,

Ion Science will be showing the newly launched ‘Titan’ continuous benzene specific monitor in Europe for the first time. The only system of its kind in the world, the revolutionary ‘Titan’ will be on display at OMC 2015 and is specially designed for the accurate and reliable detection of ambient benzene in petrochemical applications – providing the ultimate real-time protection of workforce, environment and plant. The gas detection instrumentation specialist will also be highlighting the well-proven Tiger handheld volatile organic compound (VOC) detector; Cub personal PID monitor; Tiger Select benzene and total aromatic compound (TAC) detector; Mercury Vapour Indicator (MVI); TVOC fixed PID detector and a variety of GasCheck gas leak detectors.

Traditional photoionisation detection (PID) monitors easily detect benzene but they also identify other less harmful volatile organic compound (VOC) gases that are normally present at the same time. As the world’s first truly selective wall-mounted benzene monitor, the Ion Science ‘Titan’ is set to be a real game changer for the petrochemical industry and refinery applications in particular. Incorporating the well proven Ion Science MiniPID technology at the heart of the instrument, ‘Titan’ is highly sensitive and capable of detecting benzene levels down to 0.1ppm and up to 20 ppm.

Offering rapid and accurate detection, ‘Titan’ continuously samples and analyses the environment to provide real-time feedback of ambient benzene levels. When a sample is taken, the benzene component is chemically filtered using a robust separation technology so ensuring no false-positives are measured with potential cross-contaminating compounds in the atmosphere. Like all Ion Science PID instruments, ‘Titan’ utilises the company’s unique patented Fence Electrode technology for unrivalled resistance to humidity and contamination. This key feature makes ‘Titan’ ideal for extended operation in harsh environments.

Ion Science’s ‘Titan’ features a clear display and provides users with an immediate warning alarm system when hazardous levels of benzene are detected ensuring the on-going safety and protection of workers. Designed to operate in conditions ranging from -20°C up to +60°C , ‘Titan’ is unaffected by changes in ambient temperature. It incorporates two temperature regulation systems to ensure critical components perform optimally. It is modular in design, easy to service and designed to operate for as long as possible without intervention.

Offering a robust and reliable design, the well-proven, intrinsically safe Tiger handheld PID also features advanced, patented Fence Electrode technology for increased resistance to humidity and contamination, allowing extended operation in difficult working conditions. It provides a dynamic detection range of one parts per billion (ppb) to 20 000 parts per million (ppm), offering the widest measurement range of any other VOC instrument on the market.

Tiger requires no complicated set up procedures via a PC and provides the best available VOC detection and software features available. It has the fastest response time on the market of just two seconds and can be connected directly to a PC via the USB offering rapid data download capabilities.

Ion Science’s Cub personal PID monitor is the world’s smallest, lightest and most sensitive gas detector for the accurate detection of VOCs and TACs. With market-leading ppb sensitivity, Cub features an audible, vibrating and flashing LED alarm designed to give workers an early warning of exposure to hazardous gases, including benzene, before they reach harmful levels.

The Tiger Select is a revolutionary handheld gas detector with two mode operation for the rapid and accurate detection of benzene and TACs. Utilising the high output Ion Science 10.0eV monitoring system, a reading for TACs is seen immediately on start-up. Should TACs be detected, a Draeger benzene pre-filter tube can be easily attached to ensure rapid detection and selective measurement of benzene.

The fast and accurate Mercury Vapour Indicator (MVI) detects mercury vapours in just three seconds. Unlike traditional gold film detection methods, the instrument’s dual beam UV absorption technology means MVI does not saturate or need regenerating between readings, helping to eliminate downtime. The MVI gives a real time response and is ready to detect instantly. It provides continuous readings and offers two detection ranges: 0.1 to 200 and 1.0 to 1999 microgram/m3.

Ion Science’s TVOC is a robust and rugged fixed PID detector for the continuous measurement of total VOCs within harsh environments. Designed specifically for the detection of gas leaks, the range of GasCheck gas leak detectors respond rapidly to any gas, or mix of gases. The advanced micro-thermal conductivity sensor of the GasCheck G accurately detects the smallest of gas leaks down to cc/sec, mg/m³ or ppm levels.
