Protecting people and equipment from blast

Hydrocarbon Engineering,

A major explosion or blast can occur without warning in hazardous environments, especially within oil and gas, refineries and petrochemical facilities, as recently highlighted by the unfortunate explosions at a refinery in Turkey and at a gas plant in Austria. In these locations, a proven defense is necessary to protect people and equipment. RedGuard Specialist Services specialises in the design, engineering and manufacturing of blast-resistant buildings, which can include typical brick and mortar office building amenities.

RedGuard Specialist Services is a RedGuard and Specialist Services joint venture company based in Dubai. The US-based RedGuard has the world’s largest fleet of ready-to-lease blast-resistant buildings and extensive experience in the provision of field-tested, customised modules for blast and ballistic applications. Specialist Services, with over 35 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, has the largest Zone 1 offshore and accommodation modular fleet, headquartered in Dubai with rental hubs in Europe and the Far East, all supported by extensive design and engineering capabilities in its manufacturing facilities.

Combining the assets and talents of both parent companies, RedGuard Specialist Services has the in-house design, engineering, manufacturing and distribution capabilities to address the needs of customers in the oil and gas, refinery, petrochemical and chemical industries in the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe, Africa and North America.

RedGuard Specialist Services specialises in the provision of four main products and services. LeaseFleet represents the company’s blast-resistant modular buildings fleet ready for immediate rental at any location, while SafetySuite is its premier line of customised blast-resistant buildings, built to meet client specific requirements. Specialised for government, military and industrial security, CoverSix Shelters are designed to keep personnel, electronics and equipment safe and secure at any threat level. In order to provide after-sales support to their clients, the company has also a dedicated ServiceTeam, located in Dubai, Jubail, Aberdeen, Singapore and Houston facilities.

The company provides blast-resistant modules certified to the highest industry standards in blast-resistance. With continuous investment and commitment to innovation, the blast-resistant modules have been evolved to maximise safety. Each of the company’s modules adheres to API RP 752 and 753 guidelines and applies a proven, successfully blast tested design. RedGuard Specialist Services also holds national and international certification, which verify that its products meet the highest safety and quality standards. The company’s SafetySuite modular buildings, designed in line with client specific requirements, can be certified by any of the major third party surveyors, such as DNV GL, Lloyd’s Register, the US Coast Guard (USCG), ABS, Bureau Veritas, Genesis Oil and Gas, etc.

Based on the demanding requirements for safety in case of blast, the company has also performed a successful field blast test to ensure that its products provide the highest levels of safety. This successful blast test was conducted by detonating an explosive charge a set distance from the building being tested. The entire process was filmed by a high-speed camera and afterward, the footage, as well as the building’s interior, exterior and structure, were closely examined to determine any damage. The results of the test proved the high quality and safety of these robust and reliable modules.
