Iran to launch three petrochemical units by March 2016

Hydrocarbon Engineering,

Three petrochemical projects in Iran have almost completed construction. According to the Islamic Republic’s Oil Ministry’s official SNANA news agency, three petrochemical plant projects will be ready to run by March 2016.

The aforementioned projects include phase 2 of the Kavian petrochemical plant, the Takht-e Jamshid petrochemical complex, and the development project at Lorestan Petrochemical’s linear, low and high density polyethylene plant. The three plants will reportedly come onstream in the current Iranian fiscal year (ending 21 March 2016) in case of providing feedstock. .

According to Iranian officials, the Kavian petrochemical plant is one of the world’s largest ethylene producing units and once phase 2 of this complex has been finalised, the total production capacity of the complex will hopefully exceed 2 million tpy.

In total, Iran’s petrochemical output hit 44.4 million tpy in the past Iranian fiscal year (ended on 20 March), which is 10% more than the year before. The country’s actual production capacity is around 60 million t, however the shortage of natural gas for feedstock, the condition of old production units, and the difficulty of imposed sanctions, which has dropped export capabilities, have all caused petrochemical complexes to work at much lower capacities.

Iranian petrochemical plants use 37 million m3/d of natural gas, while Iran could only deliver around 2.8 million t of ethane to plants, in total, during last year. The country planned to increase this volume to 4.2 million t in the current fiscal year.

The first phase of the Damavand Petrochemical Company’s power plant as well as the mono ethylene glycol (MEG) unit at the Morvarid petrochemical plant are almost 99% completed.According to the report, the construction of several other petrochemical units are already underway, including: The Karoon petrochemical plant, The Marvdasht plant and the Mahabad petrochemical plant. The Karoon petrochemical plant project is developing well and it’s second phase of construction has made 98% physical progress. The Marvdasht petrochemical plant and the heavy and light polyethylene units of the Mahabad petrochemical plant are also 97% complete.
