Maintenance and construction update: Late January
India
Technip has been awarded a contract for the construction of a 1.25 million tpy purified terephthalic acid unit. The contract has been awarded by JBF Petrochemicals and the unit will be added to the petrochemical plant currently being constructed at the Mangalore Special Economic Zone.
Kuwait
Between April and May part of the Mina Abdullah refinery is scheduled to be taken offline for maintenance. It has been reported that the vaccum, coker and naphtha units will be down during this maintenance period.
Malaysia
The Qatari sovereign wealth fund is looking to invest US$ 10 billion in to Malaysian businesses. It has been announced that approximately half of the budget will be spent on the construction of a petrochemicals complex in the country.
UK
The Essar Energy owned Stanlow refinery is increasing production capacity in hope of achieving better margins of return. The facility is improving efficiency as well as changing its fuel to run boilers and ceasing the production of lubricants.
USA
Holly Refining is looking to increase production at its Utah refinery and is seeking a permit for the Wood Cross facility. If the permit is granted the facility will increase its production to 60 000 bpd, however, due to the installation of new equipment, the emissions level from the facility will decrease.
The South Dakota Supreme Court has granted an air quality permit to Hyperion to construct a new refinery in the state. The facility will require an investment of US$ 10 billion.
Vietnam
Idemitsu Kosan of Japan, Kuwait Petroleum International and Mitsui Chemicals of Japan have signed a deal with PetroVietnam to construct the Nghi Son refinery. The plant is expected to be online by 2017 and have a processing capacity of 10 million tpy.
