Brief global refinery update

India

Unrest continues at the India Oil Corporation Limited Paradip refinery. Workers have halted construction work with protests concerning the mysterious death of a coworker on the plant site on Saturday 19th January. Trade union leaders are now in talks with the refinery.

Malaysia

Petronas and BASF SE have terminated a joint venture contract in the speciality chemicals sector. The contract was for the production of speciality chemicals at a refinery and petrochemicals integrated facility in Pengerang, Johor. Regardless of the termination of this project, the partnership BASF PETRONAS Chemicals is not affected.

USA

A fire that broke out at HollyFrontier’s Wyoming refinery has been blamed on an equipment leak. The equipment is part of the plant’s delayed coker unit. The fire broke out at midday on Wednesday of last week and burned for two hours. There were no injuries or production problems.

A pungent odour has been detected around the Chevron owned El Segundo refinery in California. The smell is said to stem from an operational issue that occurred during routine maintenance on Sunday 20th January.
