Mid January: USA downstream update

California

On Friday 11th January, BP filed two flaring notices with the California state regulators. These filings were linked to maintenance activities at the Carson refinery’s FCC unit and alkylation unit. The flaring was an unplanned event.

 

At the end of December, Tesoro’s Wilmington refinery donated US$ 5000 to the Food Finders ‘Keep The Trucks Rolling’ campaign. The truck in question drives around the LA area picking up food donations which are distributed via missions and large food agencies.

 

On 13th January there was a fire at Chevron Corp’s El Segundo refinery. The fire damaged equipment in the FCC unit. This is California’s largest refinery and has a processing capacity of 279 000 bpd.

 

Alon is going to close down the Bakersfield refinery for the foreseeable future which could last until the end of the year. Due to this shutdown, more than half of the facility’s workers will lose their jobs. The facility is being taken offline due to high crude prices and low demand.

 

Ohio

Marathon Petroleum Co. are going to pay the city of Canton a one off payment in order to send treated wastewater to the city’s storm sewers. The city will be given US$ 800 000.

 

Texas

After a power interruption on Friday 11th January, BP’s Texas City refinery, the FCC unit and alkylation unit were forced offline. The incident was logged with the Texas state environmental regulators.

 

Valero Energy Corp. is carrying out maintenance at its Texas City facility. The FCC unit is offline and has been out of service since December 22nd 2012.
