API responds to FERC Policy Statement update

Hydrocarbon Engineering,

The American Petroleum Institute (API) has responded to the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) revised Updated Certificate Policy Statement, warning that increased delays in the permitting process for natural gas and LNG infrastructure will make it harder to deliver and export affordable, reliable energy at a time of rising energy costs and heightened geopolitical tensions.

“At a time of rising energy costs and geopolitical tensions, policymakers should be ensuring the permitting process for natural gas and LNG infrastructure is streamlined, transparent and consistent to ensure American producers can meet demand for affordable, cleaner energy here in the US and overseas,” API Vice President of Midstream Policy Robin Rorick said. “FERC’s actions […] unfortunately insert more uncertainty into the process and will only add more delays on top of an already overly bureaucratic process that is hampering the vital pipeline and other energy infrastructure needed to deliver and export natural gas, which is the leading reason the US has reduced emissions to generational lows.

“We look forward to reviewing FERC’s proposed approach to considering [greenhouse gas] emissions and providing the Commission with feedback on the practical implications of their proposal during the comment period.”
