Stanlow refinery announces voluntary job losses

Essar Energy’s Stanlow refinery, Britain’s second largest, is set to decrease staffing levels in an attempt to cut costs.

Essar are looking to downsize the plant in order to ensure the refinery’s future, reducing output capacity from to approximately 195 000 bpd from 296 000 bpd. A crude distillation unit will be shut down in October.

The company is offering voluntary redundancy to approximately 1000 staff, offering a fixed sum of £30 000/head.

An Essar spokesperson told the local news outlet, the Chester Chronicle: “Before considering any changes, Essar Oil has in conjunction with a proposal from a specially formed joint working group of employees froma cross the company, decided to offer an entirely voluntary leaver incentive scheme to staff who may be considering alternative options for their future career.

“The offer is available to all employees, but will be granted on a discretionary basis, dependent on the right blend of skills and experience required to help us build a positive and long term future for our business”.

No compulsory redundancies are foreseen.
