Most Americans support Canadian oilsands imports

The majority of Americans strongly value Canada’s role as a secure, stable and friendly supplier of oil for US families and businesses, according to a poll by Harris Interactive for API and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP).

The poll shows that support becomes stronger when Americans learn about the jobs Canadian oil creates in the United States.

‘As policymakers debate important questions about our energy security, this survey makes it clear that Americans overwhelmingly want the administration to support greater use of Canada’s abundant resources,’ said Jack Gerard, API president and CEO.

CAPP President Dave Collyer said the poll shows that many Americans view Canadian oil as reliable and friendly. ‘Canada’s oil industry wants to help reduce US dependency on other countries and create US and Canadian jobs,’ he said.

Key findings of the poll include:

  • Most Americans are not aware of how much Canadian oil is sent to the US every day, underestimating the imports by as much as 20 times.
  • 56% of Americans feel that over half of US imports of oil should come from Canada.
  • 85% believe US policies should support use of Canadian oilsands.
  • Most of those polled listed numerous reasons to import oil from Canada, including buying from an ally, a stable democracy with a good human rights record, as well as the fact that there are important jobs and economic benefits for the US.

The telephone survey of 1010 Americans was conducted between March 30 and April 3, 2011 and has a margin of error of +/- 3.1%.
