NPRA expresses support for amendment to rein in EPA

The National Petrochemical & Refiners Association president, Charles T. Drevna, issued the following statement on April 6 after the Senate failed to approve an amendment by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to bar the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gas emissions from stationary sources under the Clean Air Act:

‘Senator McConnell’s amendment would have helped achieve the goal President Obama expressed last week of establishing a sound energy policy that benefits American consumers and strengthens our economic and national security. It’s encouraging that the McConnell amendment received 50 votes in the Senate, but unfortunate that it failed to win the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.

‘It’s also encouraging that when you add up the votes in support of the McConnell amendment and other amendments that sought to restrict EPA’s greenhouse gas regulations in some manner, 64 senators cast votes recognising the harmful nature of these regulations.

‘We look forward to working with senators on both sides of the aisle on a bipartisan measure that would stop EPA from using greenhouse gas regulations to drive up energy costs, destroy American jobs, weaken America’s manufacturing sector and make our nation more dependent on foreign industries for vital products.

‘EPA regulation will have zero impact on global greenhouse gas emissions, as EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson recently admitted herself. Such regulation will cause tremendous harm and bring no benefit to the American people, and needs to be stopped cold. NPRA will continue seeking to overturn EPA’s attempt to regulate greenhouse gas emissions in the courts.’
