Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited (KPRL) has announced the appointment of Standard Chartered Bank as financial adviser in the planned US$ 784 million upgrade of its Changamwe refinery. The refinery currently meets 40% of the nation’s fuel needs, but the upgrade is expected to increase this figure to 60%.

Nigeria

Nigeria’s security forces have discovered and destroyed 500 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta region. The operations were based in Mbiama, a coastal border town between Rivers and Bayelsa states.

South Africa

The government has told refinery operators that they have until 2017 to upgrade their plants in line with new draft fuel specifications. The country is aiming to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and wants less carcinogenic benzene and sulfur in its fuels due to public health concerns.
