9th January: downstream news update

Following the derailment of train cars on Tuesday 7th January on a train from New Brunswick Canada, Irving oil have said that some of the cars were on their way to the company’s Saint John refinery. The train was carrying crude oil and propane.

Work is currently being carried out at the Come By Chance refinery to resume operations after a power outage over the weekend. It has been reported that the plant is currently in start up mode and normal operations are expected to resume in the next few days.


The National Energy Conservation Award for 2013 has been awarded to Indian Oil’s Bongaigaon refinery. The awards recognise commitment to energy conservation and the award was presented in a ceremony on 16th December 2013.


A consortium of South Korean firms, led by Hyundai Engineering & Construction has been awarded a contract to build a refinery in Iraq. The US$ 6. 04 billion plant will have a processing capacity of 140 000 bpd. The contract is expected to last 56 months.


An operational issue at the ExxonMobil Baytown Olefins plant, Texas resulted in flaring and a rumble that was heard by the community on 8th January. There is no danger to the surrounding residents and operations are running as usual.

Tesoro Corporation are going to pay US$ 472 000 in penalties after 35 violations were recorded over two years at the Martinez refinery. The penalties are being paid to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the violations were incurred between 2009 and 2011. The violations range from power failures that prompted shelter in place warnings to fires.

Greenbelt Resources Corporation has announced a patent protection filing for its proprietary ethanol/water separation membrane module technology on behalf of its subsidiary Diversified Ethanol Corporation. The patent pending system utilises the Hitachi-Zosen membrane known for purifying a number of liquids and gases including ethanol and other organic solvents.
