North America downstream update: early July
Alberta
Imperial Oil Ltd. has announced that it expects to finish maintenance work at the Strathcona refinery, Edmonton by 15th July. Process units at the facility were taken offline during the maintenance period and will be brought back online in sequence. Initially, Imperial Oil had hoped to finish all maintenance work at the site by mid June.
California
It has been reported that a compressor malfunction at the BP Carson refinery had no significant impact on operations. The compressor was only offline for a matter of minutes according to the plant.
ExxonMobil’s Torrance refinery has reported that it is planning flaring at the facility from 7 – 9th July. The plant made the filing with the South Coast Air Quality Management District on Thursday 5th July.
On 2nd June Chevron Corp. reported a compressor trip at the El Segundo refinery. The trip resulted in a series for flaring events at the facility.
North Dakota
The construction of the Thunder Butte refinery has been confirmed after final approval from the US Environmental Protection Agency was granted earlier this week. The Three Affiliated Tribes have been seeking to construct a refinery on their tribal lands since 1997. The plant will be built on the Fort Berthold Reservation and will process Bakken oil in to clean fuel.
Philadelphia
Sunoco and The Carlyle Group have officially announced a joint venture agreement that will keep the Sunoco Philadelphia refinery online. The plant is the oldest and largest refinery in operation on the US East Coast and has a processing capacity of 300 000 bpd. The new venture will be called Philadelphia Energy Solutions.
Texas
Valero Energy Corp. filed a notice with the US National Response Centre on Monday 2nd July with regards to the McKee refinery. The filing was made due to work being carried out on the plant’s sulfur recovery system after a malfunction.
Over the weekend of the 1st July, Phillipps 66 repaired leaks on a portion of the gasoline producing FCC unit at the Sweeny refinery. A filing was made with the State Pollution Regulators.
