CUI Global Inc. has announced that its subsidiary, Orbital Gas Systems Ltd has been awarded a US$3 million project to design, manufacture, and produce innovative solutions for gas quality and volumetric metering within SGN's Great Britain gas distribution network. Orbital has been awarded this contract by DNV GL.

The project aims to optimise gas network design and network operation assumptions and will use a pilot trial methodology with the procurement and installation of innovative sensor technologies across pressure tiers in a gas distribution system. These technologies, combined with novel power and communications and a cloud-based data system, will be used by DNV GL to develop a prototype real-time energy demand model.

This project will involve the delivery of 10 monitoring stations installed within urban and residential environments. Orbital's GasPT analysers and VE Technologies® will provide near real-time gas quality data.

SGN's Network Innovation Competition (NIC) project is funded by Ofgem.

SGN's Innovation and New Technology Manager, Angus McIntosh, explained: "Key to a lower carbon economy will be flexible energy networks."

Orbital will be responsible for the design, manufacture, delivery, installation, commissioning and maintenance of the gas quality and flow measurements during the real-time gas network field trial.

"Orbital's track record and flexibility coupled with our innovative product offering have all played a key role in the award of this contract," stated Orbital's UK Sales Director Neil Stuchbury. "The Orbital brand is based on these key elements bringing us unique opportunities to deliver world firsts, I must also mention our project management capabilities, which consistently deliver successful projects on time, to budget, and while placing Health and Safety at the upmost of importance."

CUI Global's president & CEO, William Clough, commented: "This project is yet another testament to the versatility of the GasPT device. The requirements that this innovation project demanded could not be met by traditional analytical methodology. However, our GasPT device not only suited the low cost, low power, low utility demands, and small footprint requirements, but it also provided unrivalled speed and accuracy for the application."

"With this project, the Snam Rete deployment, and other recent successes, more and more end users are realising the benefits of the GasPT technology and we are beginning to receive more and larger inquiries from some of the leading energy companies in the natural gas industry," Clough concluded.
