Early November: Maintenance and construction update

China

Formosa Petrochemical has recommenced operations of the residue desulfuriser unit at its only refinery in China. The unit was taken offline for unscheduled maintenance on 12th October this year after a leak was detected. The unit has a processing capacity of 80 000 bpd.

India

Over the weekend, a delegation of 15 high level members of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited visited a site in Barmer which has been selected as a contender for the construction of a new refinery. As well as inspecting the land, the delegation met the district collector to discuss feasibility and technical issues.

Nigeria

US$ 1.6 billion has been set aside for turnaround maintenance at Nigeria’s four refineries by the end of 2014. However, despite the enthusiasm with which this decision has been received, many feel it will be in vain due to the amount of corruption in the country.

USA

Within the next few days Delta Air Lines are hoping to have the Trainer refinery, Pennsylvania running at full capacity. The 185 000 bpd facility has been subject of a sizeable turnaround as Delta Air Lines carried out work in increase the plant’s jet fuel processing capacity.

The Phillips 66 Bayway refinery in New Jersey suffered large amounts of damage due to a salt water flood after Hurricane Sandy last week. Work is now being carried out at the 238 000 bpd facility to get it back up and running. It is hoped that the plant will only be affected for a few weeks.

Marathon Petroleum has announced that the newly expanded Detroit refinery will be back online in a matter of weeks. Marathon have increased processing capacity to 120 000 bpd, of which 100 000 bpd will be for processing Canadian heavy crudes.

After a fire at Chevron’s Richmond refinery in August, it has been announced that Chevron are hoping to have the facility back up and running within the first three months of 2013.
