California

After a power dip in the middle of last week at the Phillips 66 LA refinery, units were restarted quickly. Affected units were not named.

Canada

A Can$ 2.66 billion at the Coop Refinery’s Regina plant has made the facility the fourth largest in Canada. The refinery has been expanded by 45% and will have a processing capacity of 145 000 bpd when all new units are brought online.

Colombia

A FARC guerrilla group run refinery was found by Colombian soldiers and destroyed in the Narino province of the country. At the site nearly 233 bbls of oil were found which had been tapped from a nearby pipeline.

Curacao

PDVSA have been offered an extended lease at the Isla refinery if the company invest US$ 1.5 billion in upgrading the plant, which was constructed in the WWI era. The refinery is the topic of many complaints from local residents with regards to pollution so the upgrade work is vital to its running.

Hawaii

After a weaker than expected tsunami in Hawaii on Saturday night, the state’s two refineries were running at normal capacity. The tsunami was a result of a 7.7 magnitude earthquake off the boast of British Columbia. It was only 2.5 ft in height rather than the expected 6 ft.

Hurricane Sandy 

On Sunday 28th October, several refineries on the US East Coast started shutting down in preparation for Hurricane Sandy. Phillips 66 will be shutting down its Bayway refinery in New Jersey, Philadelphia Energy Solutions are shutting down the region’s biggest refinery. Also, PBF Energy and Hess Corp. curbed output at the Delaware and New Jersey facilities.

New Mexico

Navajo Refining Company has paid US$ 400 000 fine to the New Mexico Environment Department after an accident in March 20120 which killed two plant workers and injured an additional two. The plant owners were cited with failing the properly inspect work areas.
