Handling increasing yields from asphaltene/pitch streams

A review of the various residue upgrading technologies available for managing asphaltene/pitch streams resulting from BOTB processes such as residue phase hydrocracking and solvent deasphalting.

Marvin Petit-Homme, Manager of Residual Products at industrial process solutions company IPCO, outlines the challenges facing the oil and gas industry in a changing market, and the need to invest in residue upgrading technologies and realign refinery assets to achieve stable growth and diversification.

This white paper describes the different processes available for converting liquid pitch into a flowable, solid form for easier storage, handling and transportation. This paper also explores factors such as type of crude, crude slate, upstream unit operation, DAO yield, feed temperature and viscosity, all of which need to be considered in order to determine the optimal form of solidification.
