EIA September Monthly Energy Review

The September 2016 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA's primary report of recent and historical energy statistics, was released on September 27, 2016. Preliminary data indicate that for the first six months of 2016:

• US primary energy consumption totaled 48 quadrillion Btu, a 2% decrease compared with the first six months of 2015. Renewable energy consumption increased 9%, petroleum and nuclear electric power consumption each increased 1%, natural gas consumption decreased 1%, and coal consumption decreased 18%.
• US primary energy production totaled 42 quadrillion Btu, a 5% decrease compared with the first six months of 2015. Natural gas plant liquids production increased 10%, renewable energy production increased 9%, nuclear electric power production increased 1%, dry natural gas production was virtually unchanged, crude oil production decreased 4%, and coal production decreased 28%.
• US primary energy imports totaled 13 quadrillion Btu, a 6% increase compared with the first six months of 2015. US primary energy exports totaled 7 quadrillion Btu, a 6% increase from 2015.

The MER provides monthly and annual data on total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions.
