Wärtsilä has signed a turnkey contract to supply an LNG receiving terminal to be built in Raahe, Finland. An EPCI (engineering, procurement, construction and installation) contract has been signed with energy company, Raahen Voima. The scope includes two LNG vacuum insulated storage tanks with a combined net volume of 1400 m3, an LNG regasification system, truck loading and unloading functions, and all required civil structures. The LNG terminal is scheduled to be operational in April 2018. The LNG will be supplied to Raahe by trucks from Wärtsilä's first LNG terminal installation, the Tornio Manga facility in Finnish Lapland.
The main user for the natural gas from the terminal will be the SSAB Raahe steel mill. By using LNG to generate power and heat to the mill, SSAB will be able to move to cleaner energy production. As a result of switching to LNG, the steel mill will notably reduce its CO2, NOX and SOX footprint.
"We wanted a modern LNG terminal that utilises reliable technology. Wärtsilä's technology fits our need and they have experience as an EPC provider," said Pekka Inkala, CEO, Raahen Voima.
"We are excited to be chosen as the EPC contractor for this LNG project. LNG not only provides a reliable source of fuel, but also allows customers to produce their products with a smaller impact on the environment," said Timo Mahlanen, Senior Business Development Manager, Wärtsilä Energy Solutions.
