The June 2016 Monthly Energy Review (MER), the US Energy Information Administration’s (EIA's) primary report of recent and historical energy statistics, was released on 27 June 2016. Preliminary estimates of residential sector energy consumption indicate that for March 2016:

  • US residential sector total energy consumption equaled 1.6 quadrillion Btu, an 18% decrease from the total of 2.0 quadrillion Btu in March 2015.
  • Electricity retail sales and electrical system energy losses accounted for 61% of residential sector total energy consumption.
  • Natural gas accounted for 29% of residential sector total energy consumption, petroleum accounted for 6%, and renewable energy accounted for 4%.

The MER provides monthly and annual data on total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions.
