The November 2016 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA's primary report of recent and historical energy statistics, was released on 22 November 2016.
Preliminary estimates of transportation sector energy consumption indicate that, for August 2016, the transportation sector accounted for 29% of US total energy consumption. Total energy consumption in the sector equaled 2.5 quadrillion Btu, a 2% increase from August 2015.
Petroleum accounted for 92% of total energy consumption in the transportation sector. Biomass accounted for 5% of sector consumption, while natural gas accounted for 2%. Electricity retail sales and electrical system energy losses accounted for less than 1%.
The MER provides monthly and annual data on total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions.
