USW oil workers to rally
The USW has said that rank and file union members and their elected leaders will rally with allies and supporters today (March 19), at BP’s corporate offices at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Even though the tentative agreement formed last week with oil industry representatives could lead to the end of the current industry wide unfair labour practice strike, each local unit and their management counterparts mush also conclude their own individual and site specific negotiations as well as accepting issues as outlined in the pattern settlement.
Some oil industry employers are working with the USW to finish local bargaining and execute contract but it has not reportedly been the case with BP at refineries in Whiting, Indiana and Toledo, Ohio. The union expects today’s rally at Chicago Mercantile Exchange to show BP management that USW oil workers are united in their drive for fair contracts and are serious about the safety improvements long overdue at BP and throughout the oil industry.
