The American Petroleum Institute (API) has announced that it has signed two separate Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) and the Nondestructive Testing Management Association (NDTMA). These agreements support the industry’s shared goal of promoting quality non-destructive testing (NDT) and examination, and enhanced safety for the natural gas and oil industry.

Non-destructive testing and examination is a crucial component to safety and sustainability in the natural gas and oil industry. Owners and operators rely on NDT technician’s skills and abilities to perform the appropriate assessments that inform their asset integrity plans, which are essential for safe operations and help to avoid costly mistakes. Both the ASNT and NDTMA bring decades of experience in the inspection community and are recognised leaders in the NDT space.

“API is committed to working with our colleagues to ensure that the natural gas and oil industry has access to the best possible NDT resources,” API Director of Individual Certification Programs Andri Orphanides said. “Working with these leading organizations advances our mission and strengthens our industry, ensuring that we’re preparing quality NDT technicians.”

The agreement with ASNT will foster collaboration among the two organizations to identify non-destructive testing and examination needs, which would benefit the entire natural gas and oil industry.

“With the signing of this MoU, ASNT looks forward to building on our already successful relationship with API to advance the field of NDT and meet the needs of the oil and gas industry,” ASNT Executive Director, Neal J. Couture, said. “Through our collaboration, we will work together to leverage our collective expertise and resources in providing technical and programme input to create linkages and the sharing of information and knowledge.”

The agreement with NDTMA establishes collaboration on training, conferences, assessments and quality programming, ensuring future NDT professionals attain the necessary skills to achieve professional excellence. It also aims to close the skills gap for NDT technicians and their managers, and to create more opportunities for career advancement.

“Addressing the current and long-term international industry challenges such as workforce pipeline, technology adoption and certification requires close collaboration by NDTMA and API to help keep the public safe while assuring that our industry thrives,” NDTMA Executive Director Marybeth Miceli said. “We are honored to work in partnership to combat these challenges that help to protect our critical assets and ensure they are safe, efficient, resilient, and reliable.”
