UNIMOT transports South American crude to PCK refinery

UNIMOT Paliwa, a subsidiary of UNIMOT S.A., imported a seaborne shipment of crude oil to Gdansk in July this year. The crude will be transported from the Naftoport terminal to the PCK refinery in Schwedt, Germany, using PERN's pipeline infrastructure.

The delivery of South American crude oil via Gdansk to Schwedt demonstrates that the Polish independent multi-energy group can play an increasingly important role in supplying crude oil to refineries across the Central and Eastern European region, thereby supporting regional energy and fuel security. In this context, not only the origin of the crude matters, but also who organises the supply, through which infrastructure it is transported, and under what operating model.

Following the suspension of Kazakh crude oil deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline in May this year, PCK - supported by the UNIMOT Group - secured an additional shipment of crude oil from South America. This delivery will significantly strengthen the security of fuel supplies for both eastern Germany and western Poland.

"This shipment has significance beyond a single commercial transaction. Every solution that strengthens the stability of crude oil supplies from the western direction enhances fuel security on both sides of the border. In this case, Poland's maritime and pipeline infrastructure becomes an integral part of the regional fuel security of both countries," said Robert Brzozowski, Vice President of the management board for commercial affairs at UNIMOT S.A.

"For several years, the UNIMOT Group has been consistently developing its capabilities in crude oil trading, supply chain organisation, and the management of physical logistics. This is a natural extension of the experience we have gained in domestic and international fuel trading, supply diversification, and logistics management," Brzozowski added.

2 million t of fuel from Schwedt to Poland

According to the PCK refinery in Schwedt, nine out of ten vehicles in Berlin and Brandenburg run on fuel produced at the refinery, which supplies approximately 90% of the gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil consumed in Berlin and Brandenburg.

However, the importance of the PCK refinery extends beyond the German market. Approximately 2 million t of finished fuels produced at the Schwedt refinery are also supplied annually to western Poland, supporting fuel availability in the provinces located along the German border.

Since September 2022, the majority shareholder of the PCK refinery in Schwedt has been under the trusteeship of the German government. This arrangement was introduced in response to the war in Ukraine and is intended to safeguard the security of energy supplies and the stability of critical infrastructure.
