Eleven Safway Services refinery crews received the Meritorious Safety Performance Award from the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) association, based on their outstanding records of safety.

"We are tremendously honoured to receive these 11 awards," said Paul Amedee, Safway Vice President for Environmental Health and Safety. "Safety is our number one priority. Nothing is more important to our company, and these awards reflect our commitment."

He added, "Ultimately though, the credit really goes to our crews, because they're the ones who live our culture of safety company-wide."The AFPM awards programme was developed to promote safe work practices in the refining and petrochemical manufacturing industries, and among the contractors supporting them. The awards were presented at the National Occupational and Process Safety Conference in May of 2016. AFPM represents firms responsible for virtually all US petroleum-based energy.

"The safety of our employees and people in the surrounding communities is paramount to every AFPM member company, and I would like to thank the winners for continuing to exceed the high standards our industries have set for themselves," said AFPM Chairman and Tesoro President and CEO Greg Goff.

The trade group cited Safway's remarkable safety record at the following sites: Tesoro Refining's Salt Lake City Refinery, Utah, 22 906 safe work hours; Shell Chemical's Deer Park Chemical Plant, Texas, 28 259 hours; Marathon Petroleum's Galveston Bay Refinery, Texas, 157 564 hours; Westlake Chemical's Westlake Petrochemical Site, Louisiana, 89 509 hours; Shell Chemical's Norco Chemical Plant, Louisiana, 64 183 hours; Phillips 66's Alliance Refinery, Louisiana, 157 154 hours; Shell's Puget Sound Refinery, Washington, 22 805 hours; Tesoro's Anacortes Refinery, Washington, 134 746 hours; Phillips 66's Ferndale Refinery, Washington, 20 108 hours; Valero's Benicia Refinery, California, 61 468 hours; Phillips 66's Wood River Refinery, Illinois, 373 088 work hours with one incident.

In 2015, ten Safway sites were honoured, and the previous year four sites received the Meritorious Safety Performance Award.

The award recognises maintenance contractors working a minimum of 20 000 hours per calendar year at a regular AFPM-member facility which has achieved a total recordable incidence rate of 0.6 or less with no workplace related fatality during the calendar year. The AFPM Safety Awards are part of a comprehensive safety awards programme developed by the association's Safety & Health Committee.
