ExxonMobil is reportedly contemplating a multi billion dollar expansion project at its Beaumont oil refinery in Texas. Following the company’s plans last year to double the current 344 600 bpd capacity by 2020, this figure may now increase up to 850 000 bpd by the end of the decade. This would make it the largest US refinery and the fourth largest facility of its kind in the world.
According to local reports, the energy giant recently requested state approval to increase emissions and install new equipment at the Beaumont refinery, signalling plans for expansion. ExxonMobil has filed for four Texas permits for the refinery since October 2014.
ExxonMobil spokesman Lee Dula declined to elaborate on what the specific filings might mean for future development at the complex, or whether an expansion project is being considered. "No final decisions have been made," said Dula. "Permit activity is a part of our planning and evaluation process. As a matter of practice, we do not comment or speculate on this process or any potential projects we may, or may not, be considering."
