Hydrocarbon Engineering,

China is likely to register the highest polypropylene capacity additions globally by 2028, contributing about 45% of the total capacity additions from the upcoming planned and announced projects, according to GlobalData, a data and analytics company.

GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Polypropylene Industry Capacity and Capital Expenditure Forecasts with Details of Active and Planned Plants to 2028,’ reveals that China is likely to witness a total polypropylene capacity additions of 21.92 million tpy during 2024 to 2028 from 43 planned and seven announced projects.

Nivedita Roy, Oil and Gas Analyst at GlobalData, Commented: “Polypropylene is a key chemical in the petrochemical industry. Due to its versatile durability, heat resistance, and flexibility, it finds applications in various industries. China is witnessing a significant surge in demand for polypropylene, driven by the robust growth in the automotive, construction, and packaging industries.

In China, the highest capacity addition is expected from the ‘Fujian Eversun New Material Putian Polypropylene Plant 2’, with a capacity of 1.1 million tpy. The plant is currently under construction and is anticipated to commence polypropylene production in 2026. Fujian Eversun New Material Co. Ltd is the operator of this plant with 100% equity stake.

The second highest capacity addition in the country is from ‘North Huajin Refining and Petrochemical Liaoning Polypropylene Plant.’ The plant is expected to begin operations in 2028 with an annual production capacity of 1 million tpy.

Additionally, ‘Jinzhou Petrochemical Company Jinzhou Polypropylene Plant 2’ and ‘Jinzhou Petrochemical Company Jinzhou Polypropylene Plant 3’ represent other significant capacity additions with 0.60 million tpy and 0.90 million tpy, respectively. The plant 2 is expected to come online in 2025, while the plant 3 in 2027.

Roy concluded: “With significant investments in large scale projects and an increasing number of planned and announced plants, China is poised to solidify its position as the global leader in polypropylene production. These expansions reflect the nation's commitment to bolstering its petrochemical sector, positioning it for sustained dominance in the global market over the next decade.”
