Shell completes ethylene plant upgrade in Singapore

Shell has finished upgrading an ethylene cracker complex at its integrated refining chemicals site on Bukom Island in Singapore, which is also home to the company’s 500 000 bpd refinery.
The ethylene cracker, which uses a range of feedstock, including naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas, originally had a capacity of 800 000 tpy of ethylene. The recent upgrade has boosted production by more than 20%, as well as reduced energy consumption by around 7% and carbon dioxide emissions by 11%.
According to a company statement, the additional supply of products will support the expansion of intermediate plants on nearby Jurong Island, including Shell's monoethylene glycol plant and third party facilities.
"This project reinforces the refining chemicals integration, including feedstock, product and logistics, that we put in place when we completed the Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex project," said Graham Van't Hoff, Executive Vice President, Shell Chemicals.
