Hydrocarbon Engineering,

Today, ABB is celebrating 125 active years in Finland. Entrepreneur and inventor Gottfrid Stromberg founded the company as Stromberg in 1889 in Helsinki. ABB Finland is today an innovative automation and power technology company with over 5000 employees in 30 locations with sales of 2.3 billion Euros last year.

ABB Finland is today considered one of the company’s most dynamic and successful country organisations and ABB is continuing to invest substantially in innovation and production facilities. Ulrich Spiesshofer, ABB CEO said, ‘I would like to thank our colleagues in ABB Finland for their long standing excellent results and confirm our strong commitment to grow together in the future.’

Technology is key

The division provides customers with solutions for power transmission and distribution, building technology, sustainable transportation, renewable power and industry automation and marine solutions. It plays an important global role within ABB, with several key technologies and businesses being led there.

ABB Finland is the home to energy efficient low voltage drives and the company’s Azipod propulsion system for ships, which was invented by ABB Finland. Subsea transformers and grid automation are also other examples of Finnish innovation.

Don’t forget R&D

With more than 800 resident technologists and over 190 million Euros in annual investment, the division is one of ABB’s global research and development hubs and was the second largest research and development investor in Finland last year.

The ABB business, headquartered in Helsinki, makes a big global contribution to improve energy efficiency and lower environmental impact. Last year alone, the energy savings hit 310 terawatt hours, which is the equivalent of the electricity needs of 90 million European Union households.
