Refinery and petrochemicals news: 28 August

China

CB&I have announced that it has been awarded a contract b Ningxia Coal Industry for the construction of a grassroots petrochemical complex. The refinery is due to be built in Ningxia, China and have a production capacity of 196 000 tpy of propylene and 20 000 tpy of butene. CB&I have been contracted to provide licensing and engineering design services. Technologies from CB&I including the company’s CDHydro selective hydrogenation technology will be used at the plant.

GCC

It has been reported that that oil refineries in GCC countries saw a rise in refining operations over the last quarter. In the four weeks to the 10 August, the Diplomatic Center for Strategic Studies recorded that shipping of refined oil products hit 3.91 million t3.

Russia

JSC Gazprom has announced that it is carrying out upgrade work at the Moscow refinery. The company is looking to upgrade process furnaces and switch to gas from liquid fuels site wide. The company is looking to do this to help reduce emissions at the refinery. Furnace efficiency is expected to increase to 90% after the work is complete and emissions are expected to reduce by 95%.

USA

On the nigh of 27 August a large explosion caused a fire at the BP owned Whiting refinery in Indiana. It has been reported that fire crews were called to the site after a compressor in one of the refinery units exploded. All was declared clear just before midnight.

In the early hours of the morning of 26 August, a power outage resulted in flaring at the Torrance refinery. The plant owned by ExxonMobil burned off hydrocarbon products for approximately 3.5 hours and Del Amo Boulevard was closed during this period as a precaution. Due to the power failure several units had to be restarted.

Vietnam

Maintenance at the Dung Quat refinery has come to an end. This was the second maintenance period carried out at the plant since owners Petrovietnam opened it. The refinery was offline for approximately two months, as scheduled and was reportedly split in to five sections. Defects were also fixed at the 140 000 bpd plant as part of the scheduled work process.
