Cliffs Natural resources stopped work on its US$ 3.3 billion development in 2013 due to a number of major hurdles. These included a lack of agreements with First Nations in the area, and a lost appeal to the Ontario Mining Commission late last year that would have allowed the company an easement on the property to begin planning the necessary infrastructure.

When asked recently about the future of the planned refinery in Capreol, Michael Gravelle, Ontario’s Minister of Northern Development and Mines, said the province needs to make decisions on transportation and infrastructure in the Ring of Fire before it can move on to proposed projects like the refinery.

United Refining Company will be shutting down its entire facility for up to 10 weeks for upgrades.

This will mean that 800 to 1000 workers will be in town during the shutdown and that means increased business for restaurants, hotels and motels in the city of Warren.

The refinery will begin its shutdown on 1st March and the entire plant will be offline by 19th March.

If all goes according to plan upgrades should be finished by 19th April.

UK

UNITE is taking legal action against the owner of the Grangemouth refinery over allegations concerning the ‘leaking’ of confidential emails.

UNITE said Ineos had questions to answer over how emails appeared in newspapers last year during a dispute at the refinery.

The union said it had reported Ineos to the Information Commissioner and has started High Court action against the company.
